The renovation of 50 Mechanic St in Glace Bay is progressing well. After some delays with building permits, the slow, painstaking work of reinforcing and replacing the sills was completed. Unfortunately, winter weather forced a halt to the outside work that needed to be completed before inside work could be started. Happily, we were able to get back to work in April, and the dry sunny spring has meant that we’re actually a few days ahead of schedule with this phase of the project. To continue the project we enlisted the help of Sydport Builders, and their team worked with our faithful volunteers. As of today, we are days away from starting the plumbing and electrical work for this green, energy efficient, company house. This will be done in co-operation with instructors from Nova Scotia Community College Marconi campus. |

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality Habitat committee was launched in 2008 following the "Options for Housing Revitalization" Conference at Cape Breton University. The renamed Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia - CB Project is a member of the region's recently incorporated Affordable Housing Renovation Partnership (formerly Housing Revitalization Committee). The non-profit Partnership is working to turn some of the region's 550 vacant homes into safe, affordable housing.
The Habitat for Humanity Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Project started its first revitalization project in May 2011. Working in partnership with Cape Breton University, habitat volunteers and community partners will renovate a former Company Home on Mechanic Street in Glace Bay.
Company House 734
This particular company home found on "Mechanic Row” was built between 1901-1903, for the purpose of housing workers of the Dominion Coal Company and Sydney and Louisbourg Railway in Glace Bay.
